At last, the summer feels like summer. With Independence Day just around the corner I can’t help but reflect on the freedoms that summer brings. Every June the kids are finally free from the confines of their classrooms The summer frees us from winter coats and our heavy boots turn to flip flops. We celebrate our freedom outdoors at music festivals, beaches, parades and barbecues. We find freedom, if only temporarily, from our schedules as we enjoy vacations near and far with those we hold dear.
And of course, July 4th. celebrates America’s freedom. Our freedom from tyranny. Our freedom from oppression. And now, our freedom, as human beings, to be who we are. Legally.
While many believe our freedoms are contracting, I see them expanding. Many who have been bound are now free. Those who desire, now have the freedom to love and marry who they choose.
The freedom to be different, is the new normal.
Gandhi said:
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.
So, as we celebrate our freedoms that so many, in so many ways have sacrificed to attain, take a moment to savor the choices you have. To savor your freedom to make mistakes. To savor all the freedoms you have.
And perhaps, a quiet thank you to all of those that have made all our freedoms a reality.
